On March 6, 2024, the School of Foreign Languages successfully held a lecture on The Coexistence of Language and Translation: A Study of Key Terms in Singapore's Language and Translation Policies. The speaker of this lecture is Professor Cui Feng, a well-known scholar both at home and abroad. He is also the Vice Director of the Master of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) program at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The lecture was hosted by Vice Dean Du Jingping from the School of Foreign Languages. Professor Cui gave a brilliant lecture on various aspects such as Singapore's language environment, the development of Singapore's bilingual policy, and the basic qualities translators should possess. The lecture attracted many students of foreign language majors, who actively participated in the lecture and created a lively atmosphere.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Cui Feng started with the language environment in Singapore and the development of its bilingual policy. He introduced the unique Singaporean English and analyzed the differences between Singaporean English and Standard English through phonetic comparison. Then he focused on the unique vocabularies in Chinese used in Singapore and Malaysia, showing this unique phenomenon in this region, which aroused great interests among the audience.

Later, Professor Cui used Singapore Travel Guide as an example to explain the cultural and contextual differences that call for academic attention in the translation process. He elaborated on the basic qualities that translators should possess from five aspects: language proficiency, text proficiency, subject proficiency, cultural proficiency, and conversion proficiency. Professor Cui pointed out that in the multicultural social context of Singapore, translation activities play an important role in promoting cultural and linguistic exchanges among different ethnic groups.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Cui had a detailed discussion with the students about language translation and other issues, and he patiently answered their questions. After Professor Cui's explanation, the teachers and students gained a clearer understanding of the relationship between language and translation, and they all expressed that they have benefited greatly from Professor Cui's lecture. Finally, Dean Du summarized the lecture and once again thanked Professor Cui for his wonderful lecture.
