The Department of College English Teaching has currently ninety-five faculty members, including five professors and seventeen associate professors, two of whom are doctoral degree holders and two taking doctoral courses. The department consists of two divisions, both of which are responsible for teaching non-English majors of all levels. As a demo base, the department has undertaken the job of researching on the reform of College English teaching, which is also a state-level project of quality teaching.

By constantly improving the multiple interaction teaching model that involves the computer-aided instruction, and optimizing teaching resources and environment, the department has solved the problems resulted from “passive learning, spoon-feeding and close-ended education, which has led to the innovation of teaching methods and the assessment system. The efforts have proved effective. Our students no longer find it difficult to understand news reports from Voice of VOA、BBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and the like. They also got good marks in exams, such as IELTS, BEC, CET4 and CET6. Many of our students won prizes in “CCTV Cup” English Public Speaking Contest and the National English Contest for College Students (NECCS). For example, in 2009 “CCTV Cup”, one student came out the third and got the Top Award, and the other the First-class Award. So far, these are the best results made in this contest by students from colleges and universities of Jiangxi. In the last ten years, our undergraduate students have maintained their first place both in the performance as a group and in the number of students who won the Top Award in NECCS in Jiangxi.
