Professor Fu Jingmin from Shanghai University Lectures at the School

Professor Fu Jingmin, subeditor of Shanghai Journal of Translators and vice-chairman of Shanghai Translation Society for Science and Technology, gave a speech entitled “Translation Studies from Sociological Perspective and the Publication of Related Academic Papers” for the faculty of the School of Foreign Languages on November 19. A greeting of “nice to be back home” at the beginning of the speech brought a friendly atmosphere to the auditorium.

Professor Fu began his speech with four misunderstandings of translation: translation is transference between different languages, anyone who grasps two languages can undertake the job of translation, all linguistic material can be translated, and there is no definite method in translation. Then, from the limitations of traditional translation opinions and characters of modern translation studies, he guided audience to think over the essence of translation activity. With the awakening of awareness of translation as an independent subject, Professor Fu stressed the urgency and importance of the studies of translation norms and called on the translation studies back to its noumenon, especially to the text and the translator. In the end, Editor Fu emphasized the importance of formula of theses, introduced some latest topics in translation studies, and gave some tips about contribution to his journal.

Professor Fu’s a systematic analysis of the history of translation studies home and abroad helped teachers present to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of translation activities “as the oldest and most complicate activity in the history of human cultural exchange” and a clearer and more profound insight of future trends in translation studies.
